A UK immigration solicitor was representing a man living with HIV who faced deportation to Mogadishu. He needed evidence of how people with HIV are treated in Somalia.

He found SRA’s study, Assessing Discrimination Against People Living with HIV/AIDS in Somalia, and contacted SRA. At his request, SRA prepared an expert report on stigma, housing, work, support services and conditions in camps for displaced people.

The study and the report were presented to the court, and the appeal succeeded.

Research produced in Somalia, and published openly, helped protect a person’s rights thousands of kilometres away.

No personal details of the case are published, to protect the individual’s privacy.
