Somalia’s presidential elections have attracted more candidates over time, while the fee to register as a candidate has risen four times since 2012. Here are the numbers from the last three elections.
How many candidates ran for president?

- 2012: 25 candidates
- 2017: 24 candidates
- 2022: 39 candidates
The 2022 field was 56% larger than in 2012, with 15 more candidates than in 2017.
How much does it cost to register as a candidate?

- 2012: $10,000
- 2017: $30,000
- 2022: $40,000
- 2027: not yet announced
The fee tripled between 2012 and 2017, then rose by another third in 2022. It is now four times higher than in 2012. For scale: if all 39 candidates in 2022 paid the $40,000 fee, registration fees would have totalled $1.56 million.
Key takeaways
- More candidates are competing: 39 in 2022, the largest field so far.
- Entering the race costs much more: $40,000 in 2022, up from $10,000 in 2012.
- The 2027 fee will show whether this trend continues.
