Academic freedom

Somali Researchers Association (SRA) believes that researchers, academics and students have the right to investigate, analyse, discuss, publish and share facts, figures and research findings without intimidation, censorship, discrimination or unlawful interference. No researcher should be threatened, detained, dismissed or punished for conducting responsible research or sharing evidence in accordance with professional and ethical standards.

To support this right, SRA documents, assesses and monitors serious incidents affecting academic freedom and the human rights of members of the research and academic community. These incidents may include:

  • Killings, threats and physical violence

  • Enforced disappearances

  • Arbitrary or unlawful detention

  • Restrictions on travel or freedom of movement

  • Dismissal or loss of an academic position

  • Expulsion or suspension from study

  • Censorship or restriction of research and publication

  • Intimidation, harassment and other serious violations

The information collected helps SRA understand the risks facing researchers, raise public and institutional awareness, and support the development of more effective responses.

SRA handles reported cases responsibly, respects confidentiality and seeks to verify information before using it for documentation, referral, advocacy or public reporting.
