Climate Resilience and Disaster Risk Research

Evidence for Climate-Resilient Communities and Institutions

Somali Researchers Association (SRA) provides research, assessment, monitoring and data services to organisations working on climate change, disaster-risk reduction and community resilience in Somalia.

We support government institutions, development partners and civil society organisations to understand climate and disaster risks, identify vulnerable communities, assess resilience programmes and develop evidence-based responses.

Our work considers Somalia’s exposure to drought, floods, environmental degradation, water scarcity, displacement and livelihood disruption.

Our Research Areas

SRA can support research and assessments in areas including:

  • Drought and flood risk
  • Climate vulnerability and adaptation
  • Disaster preparedness and response
  • Community resilience and coping capacity
  • Climate-related displacement
  • Water scarcity and water-resource management
  • Food security and nutrition
  • Agriculture and climate-smart farming
  • Pastoral livelihoods and livestock systems
  • Environmental degradation and natural-resource management
  • Urban resilience and infrastructure
  • Climate-related health and education risks
  • Gender, disability and social inclusion
  • Climate finance and disaster-risk financing
  • Institutional capacity for climate and disaster management

How We Support Climate and Resilience Programmes

Climate and Disaster Risk Assessments

SRA examines hazards, exposure, vulnerability and coping capacity to identify who and what may be at risk. Assessments can be conducted at national, state, district or community level.

District and Community Risk Profiles

We support the preparation of practical profiles that bring together climate, environmental, demographic, infrastructure and livelihood information. These profiles can identify priority risks, vulnerable groups and geographic hotspots.

Resilience and Adaptation Research

SRA studies how households, communities, institutions and businesses prepare for, respond to and recover from climate shocks. Findings can support adaptation strategies, resilience programmes and resource allocation.

Programme Monitoring and Evaluation

We provide baseline studies, mid-term reviews, final evaluations and third-party monitoring of climate adaptation, disaster-risk reduction, food-security, livelihoods and resilience programmes.

Community and Stakeholder Consultation

Our teams engage government institutions, district administrations, community leaders, women, young people, pastoralists, farmers, displaced populations and other affected groups.

These consultations help explain local hazard history, livelihood changes, existing coping mechanisms and community priorities.

GIS and Risk Mapping

SRA can combine field-collected information with available geographic, administrative and environmental datasets to produce maps showing hazards, exposure, vulnerability, services and priority risk areas.

Where an assignment requires specialised climate modelling or remote-sensing analysis, SRA works with appropriately qualified technical specialists.

Our Methods

Depending on the assignment, SRA may use:

  • Review of climate, disaster and environmental datasets
  • Household and community surveys
  • Key informant interviews
  • Focus group discussions
  • Historical hazard and event analysis
  • Vulnerability and coping-capacity assessments
  • Institutional and policy reviews
  • GPS field verification
  • GIS and spatial analysis
  • Available satellite and remote-sensing information
  • Participatory community mapping
  • Stakeholder consultations and validation workshops

Climate-risk findings are presented with clear explanations of the data sources, assumptions and limitations.

Typical Deliverables

Our climate and resilience assignments may produce:

  • Climate and disaster-risk assessment reports
  • District or community risk profiles
  • Hazard, exposure and vulnerability maps
  • GIS datasets, map layouts and metadata
  • Resilience baseline and evaluation reports
  • Community vulnerability assessments
  • Institutional capacity assessments
  • Climate-adaptation and resilience recommendations
  • Policy briefs and synthesis reports
  • Dashboards and visual summaries
  • Stakeholder consultation and validation reports

Local Knowledge and Nationwide Reach

SRA combines research and GIS capabilities with a nationwide field network. Our locally recruited teams understand local environments, livelihoods, seasonal conditions, community structures and the effects of climate shocks in different parts of Somalia.

This enables us to connect technical data with the experiences and priorities of affected communities.

Work With SRA

Whether you need a climate-risk assessment, district risk profile, vulnerability study, resilience programme evaluation, GIS analysis or community consultation, SRA can provide practical and context-sensitive research support.
